I saw this picture on Hub Pages and got a great laugh. Is this how far we’ve come? The following Bible verse then came to mind: “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” – Luke 21:34 KJV
What in the world is surfeiting?! Sounds like fake surfing, i.e., counterfeit surfing. Well, it has nothing to do with fake wave running. This is about over indulgence, and how it can cloud our senses to the point where we miss God and become ensnared in the things of this world.
Here is the definition of surfeiting:
According to Merriam-Webster. surfeiting: to indulge to satiety in a gratification.
I’m sure that helped – NOT! The Free Dictionary is a little more helpful.
surfeit [ˈsɜːfɪt] n
1. (usually foll by of) an excessive or immoderate amount
2. overindulgence, esp in eating or drinking
3. disgust, nausea, etc., caused by such overindulgence
In this passage about surfeiting, Jesus warns us that our focus must be on the spiritual and not on the natural. If we find ourselves over indulging and living a life of excess, then when it’s time to meet our Maker we will surely not be prepared and that day will over take us unaware.
