There Shall Be Showers of Blessing

If we’re not getting snow showers, or ice showers, we are getting rain showers. But what we really need are showers of blessing, just like the old time hymn says. Did you ever wonder where the quote “showers of blessing” came from? Is it just from the poet who wrote the hymn or does the origin of the quote come from the Bible?

“There shall be showers of blessing.” – Bible or Not?

The origin of the quote showers of blessing may very well be from Daniel W. Whittle in 1883, but as the author of several Bible-inspired songs, perhaps he got the quote from the Bible – I ask the reader to find out for yourself.

Daniel W. Whittle(1840 – 1901) was a 19th century preacher, teacher and hymnist. He was the author of these other popular Christian church hymns:

  • I Know Whom I Have Believed – Daniel W. Whittle, 1883
  • There Shall Be Showers of Blessing – Daniel W. Whittle, 1883
  • The Banner of the Cross – Daniel W. Whittle, 1885
  • Christ Liveth in Me – Daniel W. Whittle, 1891
  • Moment by Moment – Daniel W. Whittle, 1893
  • A complete list of all Daniel W. Whittle songs is here.

Here are the complete lyrics to the classic Christian hymn There Shall by Showers of Blessing by Daniel Whittle (1883):

There shall be showers of blessing: This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing, Sent from the Savior above.

Chorus:
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing, Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys, Sound of abundance of rain.

There shall be showers of blessing; Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing, Come, and now honor Thy Word.

There shall be showers of blessing: Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing, Now as on Jesus we call!

There shall be showers of blessing, If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing, If we let God have His way.

And now for the answer about the origin of the quote There Shall Be Showers of Blessing. It IS Bible and can be found in Ezekiel 34:26 KJV. Here is the full verse:

“And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing.” – Ezekiel 34:26 KJV

May God bless you with His showers today.

  1. this posting was a shower of blessing. In michigan where I grew up, we sang that hymn almost every Sunday. You can bet we’ll sing it tomorrow if I have anything to say about it. 🙂

  2. Showers of Righteousness:

    In Hosea 10:12, we are told to, ‘…Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.’

    We till the ground and God sends the rain of righteousness. Kind of like cleaning your house before somebody comes over – we have to clean ourselves as a living sacrifice to Christ. That is a covenant, or a 2 way transaction. We till, he rains (or reigns).

    As for showers of blessings – love the song, but I don’t think it is directly from the Bible.

  3. Hey Josh, thanks for your thoughts, very insightful. And…gotcha! There shall be showers of blessing IS Bible. 🙂
